The fastest way to reactivate a customer is a discount — and the fastest way to destroy your pricing is the same discount. Here's the offer architecture that wins customers back without teaching them to wait for the coupon.

The "20% off, this week only!" text works — once. Then the customer learns your prices are negotiable, waits for the next coupon, and tells the neighbor you discount if asked. You've traded a full-price customer for a discount customer, permanently. There's a better way to make the win-back offer.

Discounts work on dormant customers because they lower the decision barrier — that's real. The trap is what happens next:
Build win-back offers in this order. Start at tier 1; only move down the list if the higher tiers aren't converting:
Notice the Tier 4 script names the fence explicitly: "one-time," "good through [date]," "back to regular pricing after." The fence is the point — it prevents the training effect.
Don't measure win-back campaigns by response rate alone — measure by reactivated customer value over 12 months. A discount campaign that reactivates 30 customers who then only buy discounted work is worse than a value-add campaign that reactivates 15 who pay full price thereafter. Track the cohort: what did the reactivated customers spend in the year after the campaign, at what margin? That's the number that tells you whether the offer architecture is working.
Offer tiers map to the reactivation calendar — the stronger the offer, the more sparingly it's used:
The calendar's hidden benefit: it paces your offers so no customer ever feels campaigned at. Four useful emails, two timely nudges, one rare discount — that's a relationship, not a coupon stream.
Example: an electrical shop has 200 dormant customers and runs two win-back tests. Group A (100 customers) gets the 20%-off tune-up text. Group B (100) gets the priority-scheduling + free whole-home safety inspection offer at full price. Illustrative results: Group A books 22 visits at the discounted price; Group B books 14 at full price with the inspection add-on. But the 12-month follow-up tells the real story: Group A's reactivated customers call back only when another discount appears; Group B's become repeat full-price customers, and three buy panel upgrades discovered during the free inspection. The discount won the sprint and lost the marathon. The shop retires the discount template.
