Total review count is a trophy. Review velocity — fresh reviews landing every month — is the engine. What "enough" looks like for your market size, and the monthly target that keeps you ahead of every competitor on your street.

Two HVAC shops in the same town. Shop A has 380 reviews — and its newest one is from eleven months ago. Shop B has 140 reviews, with six new ones this month. When a homeowner searches "ac repair near me," Shop B sits above Shop A in the map pack, and its reviews read like they're from this summer, not two summers ago. Total count told one story. Velocity told the truth.
Review velocity is simply the rate at which new reviews land on your profile — per month, roughly. Google rewards freshness: recent reviews signal a business that's active, currently good, and relevant right now. If you're running the automated review engine, velocity is the metric that tells you it's working. This post sets your target.
Reason 1: Google weights recency. A review from this week carries more ranking weight than one from 2022. A profile with 400 stale reviews looks like a business resting on its past. A profile adding reviews every week looks like a business customers choose today.
Reason 2: customers read the dates. Remember the numbers: 97% of consumers read reviews before choosing a local business (BrightLocal 2026). They don't read all 400 — they read the first 5–10, and they check the dates. "Great service!" from March 2024 answers a different question than "They fixed our AC same-day in the July heat" from last week.
Forget national benchmarks. You compete with the 5–8 contractors who show up in your map pack. Your velocity target has exactly one requirement: land more new reviews per month than your closest competitors.
Here's how to find your number in 15 minutes:
Example: your top competitor added 9 reviews in the last 90 days — 3/month. Your target is 5/month. That's it. Not 50. Just visibly, consistently more than the shop you're chasing.
If you'd rather have a starting target before doing the competitor math, use this table — then verify against your actual competitors and adjust:
These are monthly additions, not totals. A shop adding 6/month for a year ends with 72 fresh, recent, date-stamped reviews — and a profile that looks alive every time someone opens it.
You can't control who reviews — but you can control how many people you ask. Work backward from your target:
Run this with your own numbers: (target reviews per month) ÷ (your review conversion rate) = asks needed per month. If asks needed exceed your job count, your bottleneck is the ask conversion — improve the timing and wording (see review request timing) before anything else.
Velocity is only useful if you watch it. Once a month, write down three numbers:
Put it on the same calendar reminder as your quarterly profile audit. If your velocity is above target and your rating is holding, the engine is working. If velocity stalls, the failure is almost always upstream: asks stopped firing, timing slipped, or the follow-up nudge got turned off.
Velocity is the scoreboard for the automated review engine — if you haven't built the asking system yet, start there. The 2026 GBP checklist makes sure fresh reviews land on a profile worth reading, and Review Request Timing shows you the satisfaction-peak moments that maximize your conversion rate.

Stats sourced as labeled: BrightLocal 2026 (97% read reviews; 68% won't use a business under 4 stars). Ask-to-review conversion rates vary widely by trade and market — measure your own; the math illustration above uses made-up numbers to show the method, not a target.
