Customer Education Texts: The Filter-Change Reminder Series

The highest-opened texts you'll ever send aren't promotions — they're the helpful reminder that saves a customer a service call. The year-long filter-change series: the schedule, the scripts, and the quiet revenue it generates.

System 7 from the Leveraged Owner Starter Pack

The no-cool call comes in on the hottest Saturday of July. The tech arrives, opens the air handler, and pulls out a filter that looks like a gray shag carpet — completely clogged, strangling the system for months. Twenty minutes and a $12 filter later, the house is cooling. The customer is embarrassed. The tech is kind about it. And the owner thinks: this $189 emergency visit was a text message that never got sent. A filter reminder in April would have prevented the whole thing — and the customer would have thanked them for it.

This is a Pillar D play — the full, calm calendar. It works best on top of solid appointment confirmations: Appointment Confirmation Texts That Cut No-Shows in Half. Education texts keep you top-of-mind between the jobs the other systems book.

Why education texts outperform promotional texts

Promotional texts get opened because they're from a known sender. Educational texts get opened because they're wanted:

The series: the year-long schedule

Filter cadence depends on the household — 1 month for homes with pets or allergies, 2–3 months for standard homes. Build the series around a quarterly default with a note to adjust:

Tag customers by filter type at install or service time (1-inch vs. media filter, size) so the reminder can be specific: "your 20x25x4 media filter" beats "your filter" — specificity proves you know their system.

The scripts: the four reminders

January — the reset

Hi [Customer Name], it's [Business Name] with your quarterly reminder: time to check your filter. If it's gray or you can't see light through it, swap it — a clean filter is the cheapest efficiency boost there is. Need the size? Reply and I'll look it up from your last visit. Reply STOP to opt out.

April — the pre-season (most important)

Hi [Customer Name], cooling season's almost here — quick favor for your AC: change the filter this weekend. A clogged filter is the #1 cause of the "it's not cooling" calls we get in May. 5 minutes now saves you a service call later. Questions? Just reply. Reply STOP to opt out. — [Business Name]

July — the mid-summer check

Hi [Customer Name], mid-summer filter check from [Business Name]: with the AC running daily, filters clog faster than usual. Take 30 seconds to look at yours — if it's dirty, swap it and your system will thank you (lower bills, colder air). Reply STOP to opt out.

October — the heating prep

Hi [Customer Name], heating season's coming — time for the fall filter change. Clean filter = the furnace doesn't work as hard = lower gas bills all winter. While you're at it: if it's been 12+ months since your last tune-up, reply TUNEUP and I'll get you scheduled before the rush. Reply STOP to opt out. — [Business Name]

Notice the October text does double duty: the reminder plus the tune-up CTA with a keyword reply. Education first, offer second — always in that order.
