The unsexy paperwork that makes all your business texting work. Plain-English walkthrough: what you're registering, the exact steps inside your tool, the timeline, the cost, and the three mistakes that get contractors rejected.

You signed up for a texting tool, turned on the automation, and your texts vanished. Not bounced — vanished. The dashboard said "sent." Nobody received anything. You didn't do anything wrong except skip one step: registering your business with the carriers before you text. That step is 10DLC, it takes about 20 minutes of your time plus a few days of waiting, and this post walks you through it.
This is part of Pillar A: Capture Every Lead — the compliance companion to the complete missed-call text-back setup guide. Do this before you turn on any texting automation.
10DLC = "10-digit long code" — it's the system US carriers use to register businesses that send texts from regular 10-digit phone numbers. A2P = "application-to-person" — the carriers' term for any text sent by software (your automation) rather than thumbs (your phone). Put together: before your software can text customers from your business number, the carriers want to know who you are and what you'll text about. That's the registration. It's spam prevention, and it's mandatory — unregistered business texts get filtered.
Two things get registered:
One brand, one campaign covers all your texting in most small-shop setups — you don't register separately for reminders vs. follow-ups unless your tool tells you to.
Have these ready before you open the registration form. Gathering them mid-form is how 20 minutes becomes two hours:
Every tool (GoHighLevel, CallRail, and the rest) has its own screens, but the flow is the same. Here's the generic version that maps to all of them:
This post is general information about carrier registration requirements, not legal advice. 10DLC rules evolve — your texting tool's compliance docs are the current source of truth, and they update as carriers change requirements.
